What makes ebikes different from regular bikes are the extra parts: battery, controller, motor, throttle, etc. Sometimes they are disconnected, overwhelmed, incorrectly installed, etc. That’s why the screen shows error codes, they indicate different faults and errors, saving your time for checking everything. In this article, I will list all the error codes you may encounter when riding Engwe electric bikes and provide step-by-step instructions for how to fix them.

How to fix the error 021 of Engwe Ebikes
Error 021 indicates current abnormality, if the screen shows error 021, it means the controller or the motor is disconnected or broken. There are 4 steps to check.
Step 1: check the motor’s waterproof cable
You can find the motor’s waterproof cables on the right side of the rear wheel
It’s recommended to unplug and plug the cables to make sure they are properly connected. Please note that you need to align the arrows at both ends, and don’t leave any gap between them.

Step 2: check the connector that connects motor and controller
Another problem that may cause error 021 is the connector between the motor and controller are not properly connected. The controller is inside the top tube, to find the connectors, you need to fold the top tube.

After removing the four screws, you can see all the controller cables, find the 3 connectors according to the picture, the plastic part can be green or white due to different productions batches. It may be confusing when you first see all the wires, don’t worry, the connectors you need to find are the only 3 cylindrical connectors among them, so it will be not difficult.

Unplug and re-plug the cables to make sure they are properly connected.
If the error is still not fixed, please proceed to step 3.
Step 3: check the motor and controller to see if there are obvious abnormalities
Obvious abnormalities include
- Overheated
- Burnt smell
- Smoke
These conditions means the motor or the controller is ruined, you need to replace them.
If the error is still not fixed, please proceed to step 4.
Step 4: connect the bike to another controller or motor to see if the old one is broken
If the error code disappears after a new controller or motor is connected to the electric bike, it means the old controller or motor is broken.
How to fix the error 022 of Engwe Ebikes
Error 022 indicates throttle abnormality, if the screen shows error 022, it means the connector between the throttle and controller is disconnected or broken. There are 3 steps to check.
Step 1: make sure the throttle-controller cables are not damaged
Check if the connecting cables from the throttle to the controller are damaged or broken

Step 2: check the throttle rotary handle
Check if the rotary handle (throttle) can be rotated and return normally, if not, it means the throttle is broken
Step 3: check the throttle-controller cable connector
Check if the connector between the rotary handle(throttle) and the controller is well connected
To find the connector, you need to fold the top tube (refer to error 021 step 1) and remove the 4 screws.

Then you can find a flat cuboid connector with 3 wires on each side, it is the connector between the rotary handle(throttle) and the controller.

Make sure it’s properly plugged.
How to fix the error 023 of Engwe Ebikes
Error 023 indicates the motor has phase loss, it means at least one of the 3 wires connected to the motor is broken or dis-connected.
Step 1: check the motor’s waterproof cable
Check the waterproof cables of the motor to see if they are properly connected. You can find them on the right side of the rear wheel.
It’s recommended to unplug and re-plug the cables to make sure they are properly connected. Please note that you need to align the arrows at both ends, and don’t leave any gap between them.

Step 2: check the connector that connects motor and controller
Check the connectors between the motor and controller to see if they are properly connected. The controller is inside the top tube, to find the connectors, you need to fold the top tube.

How to fix the error 024 of Engwe Ebikes
Error 024 indicates the motor hall(an element in the motor) abnormality, it means either the motor hall and the controller are not connected properly, or the motor hall is broken.
Step 1: check the motor’s waterproof cable
Check the waterproof cables of the motor to see if they are properly connected. You can find them on the right side of the rear wheel
Check the connection of the cables to make sure they are properly connected, you can unplug and plug it to ensure there is no gap between them. Please don’t forget to align the arrows on both ends

Step 2: check the motor hall cable connection
Check if the motor and the controller are properly connected, make sure there are no cable looseness or falling off. Fold the top tube and remove the 4 screws, you can find the motor hall cable connector and the external speed meter connector.

Motor hall cable connector: a flat cuboid connector with 5 wires on each side
External speed meter connector: a cuboid connector with 1 wire on each side

Please make sure both of them are properly connected, you can unplug and re-plug them to ensure there is no gap between both ends.
If the error still exists after checking all the cables above, it means the motor is broken, please replace the motor.
How to fix the error 025 of Engwe Ebikes
Error 025 indicates the braking abnormality, it means the braking system is dis-connected to the controller or the braking handle is broken.
Step 1: Check both of the braking handles
Check the braking handles on the left and right to see if they work properly.
Step 2: Check the braking handles-controller connection
Check the connector between the braking handles and controller, re-plug both of the connectors to see if the error code disappears. To find the connectors connect braking handles and controller, you need to fold the top tube and remove the 4 screws.

There are 2 braking handles connectors, corresponding to the left brake handle and right brake handle, they are cuboid connectors with 2 wires on each side.

Here is a trick to identify which is which: unplug one of the connectors, try both of the braking handles, the one that stops working corresponds to the unplugged cable.
Step 3: Unplug the connectors to check braking handles
Unplug one of the connector to see if the error code disappears, if it disappears means the braking handle corresponding to this cable is broken, you need to replace it.
Unplug the other connectors to check the other braking handle, if the error code disappears, it means this braking handle is broken, replace it with a new one.
How to fix the error 030 of Engwe Ebikes
Error 030 indicates transmission abnormality, it means the connection between the controller and screen is abnormal.
Step 1: check the screen-controller cable
Check the cables between the screen and controller to see if there are looseness and breakage.
Step 2: check the screen’s waterproof cable connector
Check the waterproof cable connector of the screen, unplug and re-plug it to make sure there is no gap between both ends. Please don’t forget to align the arrows.

Step 3: check the screen-controller cable connector
Check the connector between the screen and controller to see if it’s properly connected.
To find the connector, fold the top tube and remove the 4 screws.

The connector is a flat cuboid connector with 5 wires on each side. Please do not mix the motor hall cable connector with the screen-controller cable connector, the motor hall cable is integrated with two other motor cables (motor-controller cable, external speed meter cable), screen-controller cable is independent.

After finding the screen-controller cable connector, unplug and re-plug it to ensure it’s properly connected.
How to fix speed display error with no error code
If the screen keeps showing the speed is 0km/h even though you are riding the electric bike normally, and no error code is displayed. It’s because the motor is disconnected from the controller, or the speed meter is disconnected.
Step 1: check the motor’s waterproof cable
Check the waterproof cable of the motor to see if it’s properly connected.
Please note that you need to align the arrows at both ends, and don’t leave any gap between them.

Step 2: check the external speed meter connector
You need to fold the top tube and remove the 4 screws.

You can find the external speed meter connector in the 3 integrated motor cables, it’s the connector with 1 wire on both sides.

Unplug and re-plug the connector to see if the error code is fixed.
